Somali Plant Protection Society (SPPS) is a professionally-managed, non-profit, nongovernmental, non-political, non-partisan, scholarly and professional organization founded in March, 2020 by a group of Somali plant protection scientists, viz., phytopathologists, weed scientists, entomologists and ornithologists, whose knowledge, skills and experience are needed technically to protect the arable, pasture, forestry and natural ecosystems from the ravages and losses caused by insect pests, plant diseases, weeds, and birds.
The SPPS serves as a professional platform to promote plant protection-related education, research, extension, discuss and generate knowledge through presenting research findings, conducting trainings and workshops, disseminate such knowledge effectively, foster awareness of the impacts of plant pests on the agricultural, natural ecosystems and provide science-based information to the public, private sectors, and farming communities.
Reasons under which SPPS was established is to lessen the current problem:
The igration and infestation of insect pests, diseases and weeds, etc. Outbreaks of local pests and introduction of Alien (exotic) pests into the country, Absence of phytosanitary roles, lack of national pesticides, seeds and fertilizer regulations and registration, above and beyond the misuse of pesticides, seeds and fertilizer for stakeholders. Furthermore, the Society will focus on future capacity building, training and consultancy in plant protection sectors to acquire sufficient knowledge in modern farming technologies.
